A skeptical globogymer enters a CrossFit gym to be introduced to her first workout. The workout that is being performed is Coalminer's Daughter, a workout put together in honor of the 29 fallen coalminers of the Upper Big Branch Mine. She decides to do the workout in honor of these men and her father who was also a coalminer. She has no idea what she is in for.
After she enters the gym she spots the board and this is what it says:
WOD
Coalminer's Daughter
5 Rounds
400 m run
29 push-ups
29 box jumps
29 floor to overhead (135/95)
29 pull-ups
She reads the board and immediately finds her sister-in-law who has assured her she can do this. The panic of the workout has set in. She keeps thinking "I CAN'T" but all of the people around her keep telling her she can. She warms-up with the rest of the crazy people and it's time to start the workout. She modifies the push-ups, does step-ups, uses 65 pounds, and a band on pull-ups. By the end of the workout she is doing jumping pull-ups.
The coach starts the clock 3-2-1-GOOOOO!!!! And she is off running 400 m and beginning the workout. By the end of the workout she is jogging and walking the 400 m. She can't believe she completed this workout. But she did. With all of the encouragement it was hard to quit. It was unlike anything she had ever done in her life and she felt accomplished.
That globogymer was me and that workout hooked me. From that point on, after a couple of days rest, I've been doing CrossFit. It has changed my life in so many ways. It has given me my health, happiness, and a special family to share my experiences. Thanks CrossFit:)
